PROUD TO BE ONE OF Portland's ORIGINAL CRAFT BREWERIES

THE RICH HISTORY OF beer making  AT THE OLD MARKET PUB BROADWAY GRILL

As one of the pioneering breweries in Portland, a city renowned for its vibrant brewing culture, the Old Market Pub stands among the first ten microbreweries to contribute to the beer legacy that defines the region today.

After already opening two businesses together, which was very unconventional at the time, Andy & Shelly got married in 1991. They opened their flagship brewery location, the Old Market Pub & Brewery, on a shoestring budget, scraping together everything they had and mortgaging their house for their dreams. Luckily, the business was a success and they soon had two daughters, Sarah & Savannah, who are still involved in the business today.

Andy took the lead creating recipes and spending many days in the kitchen, working on anything from doughs to breads to sauces to soups and more. He even modeled a few recipes off of his Italian mom’s cooking! Sadly, Andy passed away in December of 2021. This left big shoes to fill, but Shelly worked hard to ensure that the business would stay afloat in his memory. About three months later, there was a kitchen fire. Making lemons out of lemonade, the entire kitchen was remodeled from the bottom up which could never have been done while the business was operating.

Shelly’s perseverance helped her overcome these tragedies, and while many thought she would sell the business and close she pressed on in honor of her late husband. Andy's memory lives on through the food, brews, and good times that he loved so much at the Old Market Pub.

Our Story:  A Family Legacy Brewed Over Time

1985

On July 13, 1985, Oregon signed into law the “Brewpub Bill,” SB 813, legalizing the operations of microbreweries in the state.

1987

Slice of Life, Andy’s first venture into the pizza business, opened in a small space in Beaverton while Shelly finished up her college studies.

1989

Andy & Shelly opened a small mom-and-pop restaurant, Pizza Oasis, on W Burnside and that’s where they began creating recipes from scratch and perfecting our handmade pizza dough that we still use today.

1994

With a desire to get into the microbrewing scene, we then opened our flagship location: the Old Market Pub & Brewery. We started with a piecemeal 5-barrel system, which is now much larger with a 15-barrel system. This building originally housed Comella & Sons & Daughter Produce Market (and before that, Whitney’s Custom Cannery) – a slice of history in Portland’s Garden Home neighborhood!

2006

Our east side location, The Broadway Grill & Brewery, opened to bring our custom brews and handcrafted bites to our neighbors in the historic Irvington District of NE Portland. We’re right next to the Moda Center, so you can stop by before or after a game (go Blazers!) – or grab a pint and hang with us to watch on one of our many TVs.
